SHANGHAI 1996: The Chinese middle class love to travel, and domestic travel is all the rage. The Bund at night is a non-stop carnival of tourists, shoulder to shoulder people strolling along taking in the sights, every 3rd person has a camera and is taking pictures. Every 10th person has some sort of attention grabbing contraption they are trying to sell, all are bright, shiny and noisey. And all these tourists?.. Chinese. they don't need foreign tourism, although that's exploded also. I was glad to see my good ole bar was still there... Judy's. it's not changed much, except many new bars have opened up around it. If Beijing has grown 30 years in the past 7, Shanghai has grown 100. Shanghai has leapfrogged the present and is already in the future. It used to be a town of cranes.. much like Dubai is today, but now it's simply... over the top. The Old Town section boasts the most street hawkers in the world. They don't bother the Chinese tourists, only foreigners. So, how do you say "no" to a Shanghai Street hawker? Well, we had plenty of time to come up with answers... Here's a sampling: no, no thanks, not today, sorry, next time, don't want it, don't need it, ok you be quiet, get lost, take a hike, zip it, keep your trap shut, put a plug in it, shut your piehole, hey you - STFU, does it look like I care, talk to the hand, how does that impact global warming?, does it look like I care, your lips are doing this - I need them to do this, beat it, scram, go away, what part of no don't you understand? go jump in a river, put a cork in it, sssshhhh, hey you sssshh, make like michael and start boltin...
