I don't know who you think you are. The way you label these pictures is terrible. Living in Detroit, I know it's not the world's best. But you take pictures of broken down buildings making it seem as if Detroit is nothing but broken down. There are nice places in Detroit wether or not you got pictures of them. Detroit may be broken down, but in my opinion, Detroit has more class than you ever will.

Sure his labels are mean, but it's how Detroit looks. I don't know why people get mad at this guy who obviously cares about Detroit and took the time to actually go around the city. Sure, there are some nice spots in Detroit, but are people going to be talking about them this summer during the MLB All-star game and Super Bowl next year or are they going to be talking about how run down Detroit is? Judging from the media's reaction to Detroit already, I guarantee the latter.

I've been in Detroit my whole life and yes there are areas of despair, but not as horrible as you make the city appear. It would be nice if you spread out your pictures to other areas and not just one bad section.

Next time try to travel more than 5 minutes apart and you will see the beauty and historical treasures that Detroit has to offer. I'm only 22 and I know this, so what is your problem?

I have traveled to just about every state and there are parts that are run down just like here, so don't depict Detroit as the only place on earth like this. What a butt hole you are.

My biggest complaint isn't that Jeff took pictures of the city, but I viewed other pics of his from cities surrounding Detroit and overseas. He displays them as a joyous vacation spot and Lansing (as run down as there non college areas are) as a great drinking time. I find it disturbing and sad that he went out of his way to ensure that Detroit looked horrible (if I didn't live here I would assume this to be correct). Maybe he should come back because the city has knocked down most of these buildings since his 2003 visit.

Come to Detroit and see how Downtown is booming again - see Comerica Park, the Lions Stadium, Compuware, the ice rink, new shops and lofts that have taken over...there are more condos being built everyday and I get the opportunity of seeing all these things because I am a Detroiter.

Detroit is not some ruined city where you will be mugged and shot. Don't let news reports and white photographers fool you...come for the Super Bowl and see what Detroit has to offers. Thanks

I personally am from a small city in Pennsylvania. My cousins are the ones living in Michigan currently. Yes, Detroit is a terrible city, but as everyone else sits and their stomaches lurch as they gaze at pictures that show the truth of their city, I can relish in all of the chaos. In its own way, I find the truth to be more beautiful than those websites of photographers who turn Detroit in some dreamland for 5 year olds. It is not! You are showing honesty, and the fact that you are actually from Detroit makes me so proud that you can show these pictures, they are beautiful. The photography is amazing! Anyone who insults your subject used in the photos, well that is simply ignorant. You can not insult the talent of a photographer by looking at what the pictures contain. I love them, I'm going to use one as a desktop background I think...sometime anyway. Currently, I have one of my own pictures up, of a street in Jeanette, where my grandmother personally lives. Her neighbor's son was shot a few months ago, right near their home, it's terrible, facing the truth of it all.

I look back and see how fantastic pictures have turned out, ones in black and white as well. You could probably get a lot of nice pictures to put here if you use the black and white feature on the camera. The one city I find even comparative to this is Jeanette, Pennsylvania. It's around a twenty minute drive from the more popular, Pittsburgh. I'm glad to find a photographer who faces all the truth of the decay of their own city, and finds it as beauty in itself. I love these pictures. -Crimson

I grew up in the "downtown" area of Detroit in the 1940's. It was a beautiful place back then, it was a nice place to live. I have wonderful pictures and memories of those days. So sad to see what has happened to it. It didn't just become this way, it had to be made this way. Who did this? Why? This has happened to many nice neighborhoods in the Detroit area. Why? Why? Why?

I grew up In Bloomfield Hills, and we were told to never go near the city after dark. When people fear a city, after dark, you know there is a major problem! I moved to Atlanta after high school, to attend Georgia Tech, and I was delighted to be in a large city I felt safe in. I do feel it's unfortunate that Detroit is the black eye of all the major cities, but until the city picks a "real" mayor it won't change much. I admit there has been some progress, but these pictures are reality. Good luck Detroit. Great web site by the way. Do you plan on photographing any other points of interest in Michigan?

NOT ALL THE CITY IS SO BAD!!!!

Facts and Information about United States 9th Oct 2005, Kelly of United States comments on this gallery
I have lived in Michigan in Macomb and Wayne County for the majority of my life. I probably would still be living there if I wouldn't have joined the military. I must say Mr. Hock I am appalled that anyone from the state of Michigan, or anyone who lived there for that matter, would display they city of Detroit so cruely. From the pictures you have taken, it shows Detroit as a run down ghetto, and completely dirty and anyone not from michigan who might be interested in visiting, will look at the city like that also. When in truth, Detroit and Michigan have a lot of beautiful historical sites. Not all of Detroit looks like that. Now granted, I am from there too and yes there are many run down places that look just like your photographs. But on the other hand you name one big city that doesn't have run down Ghetto areas. They all do. There are places in Detroit that still have coble stone roads and old antique building that were built in the 1800's. For anyone that is a History Buff that would be amazing to see. How about the Henry Ford Museum? Why not portray you city as something other than a land fill? Michigan has a lot of culture and beauty. Being in the military, I have seen and visited a lot of places, city, town and countries, and I have yet to find anything remotely close to michigan. There are not a lot of places that have four true seasons. In Detroit during Fall it is beautiful. So much color. During Christmas there are light and decorations all over the place down there. Dear Sir, I am truely sadened by this. If there was a way that I could have this removed from the land of internet I would. Shame on you and your cruelty to your own fellow Michiganders. To all who are browsing this web site, I truely hope that you don't take these pictures to heart. Yes these pictures are real and yes in parts of Detroit, it does look like this, but it is also very beautiful and cultural too. I do hope that anyone wanting to visit Michigan and see MOTOWN and the MOTOR CITY, still will Partake in visiting. It will be a positive expierence that you will never forget. For all of you that live in Michigan, keep on making it a great place to live. I may not live there anymore, but I still support it and love it and it will always be my home!

Im sorry, Michigan is beautiful but Detroit is definately not. It may have been many decades ago, but those times have long past. If Detroit is to be a world class city again, the people living in it are going to have to elect a competent person to be the mayor of this very distressed and blighted city. It makes me sad to think of what Detroit used to be and what it has become. Another really bad fact about the city is it's shrinking population, and the blocks and blocks of boarded up vacant homes that show just how bad it's once thriving population has shrunk. Crime is rampant, even to the point of killing police officers. Many people say that every large American city has ghettos that compare to those of Detroit, which is absolutely true. The difference between all other large cities and Detroit is that each and every city has its bad areas, which are usually small areas compared to the overall size of the city. Detroit in the other hand is almost all bad, more than 65% of the city is in terrible condition. Dont get me wrong, dowtown Detroit looks astonishing, full of great architecture, modern adn old. Sadly, the beauty that is displayed in the Detroit skyline is only a reminder of what this city once was.

I am very glad that Jeff took these pictures. I am born and raised in that hell hole. I was born into foster care and have been in 22 different foster homes all over Detroit. That city is a real piece of shit. I mean If your house looks like a piece of shit and everything is dirty and falling apart, just because you clean your bathroom does'nt mean that your house is now clean and liveable.
I now live in Europe because it is more representative of what a proper living environment should be for my children. I came to visit my adopted mother 3 years ago with my wife, and what happened people started shooting in the street and there was absolute mayhem. You who complain that Jeff showed the bad part of the city seem to not understand that that is the part that must be shown. Yes we know down town looks nice and there are nice tourists spot but I did not live in a fucking tourists spot and neither do most of the poor Detroiters. You simply dont know better so you accept that shit part of Detroit. Well I knew there must be better than Detroit and got the hell out of there. But then I again I am more ambitious than the average nihilistic Detroiter. When I came to Detroit a few years ago I could not even visit my sister because when I went to her house there were about 20 obviously armed drugdealers lounging with their Chevy Tahoes in front of her house, of course as a person with sanity, logic and common sense I did not get out of my car, I kept driving. That same night the street shooting took place outside my house. The next morning my wife and I were on the earliest possible flight back to Europe. What was supposed to be two weeks of visiting and catching up
turned into two days of absolute disappointment. Maybe you people should go and visit Prague, Stockholm, Gent, Vienna, Maastricht, Metz, or the beautiful environment of the Ardennes. Stay in one of these places for a year and then tell me that Detroit is ok and a fine city. These pictures are where I grew up and it makes me mad as hell that you will accept that any child should be subjected to this type of environment, that any child should have to go to school in this environment or that any ambitious teenagers and young adults should become victims of this nihilistic environment. Thank you Detroit, for nothing. I went to Detroit Central. Good people did not die so that we could become rappers, drugdealers, baby killers, and just plain nihilistic self murderers. You people in these cities like Detroit have lost your minds. I am ashamed that the men that racially represent me are running around with earings and purses and jogging suits and with their pants hanging down their butts like some homo offering to be taken up the butt. So then I will represent a real African American black man in Europe.
Jeff may I have permission to use your photos for articles or books that I may write-- a.mcadory@hotmail.com

I forgot to add how disappointed i am that you nut jobs hired a common street thug as a mayor. Are you Crazy. You people really make me sick. I mean I must come from the only city where people run toward the septic tank park to set up camp and live happily ever after in absolute misery, and then boast that because a few of the septic tanks are made of gold that it's ok. I mean I can go at you numbskulls who made some of these ridiculous comments all day. Imean did you not have two tornadoes hit Detroit, which means God and Mother Nature wants to wipe that city of the map.

Oh and Kelly Detroit does have culture it is called a culture of nihilism. I think you fail to see the big picture Kelly. All of these ghettos need to be destroyed so that these children will have better chances in life, damn the cobble stone streets.

Yeah isn't this about a joke!!!!!! Did you at all watch any of the superbowl coverge jerk off??!!!! I bet you feel awfully little now. Detroit has come a long way from its bad name. Detroit is beautiful, and there are beautiful pics to take here!! It's kind of ashame you chose to take pictures of a more run down part. I'm sure if you went to your nearest big city, you could take some similiar pics!!!! Try visiting downtown next time. And for the comment below from mr. anonymous, the SuperBowl was great and gave Detroit kind of a rebirth and people look at it in a different light!! haha
