Law of Attraction Cliff Notes

February 7th, 2008

You may have heard of it on Oprah, she calls it “The Secret” and has promoted a book to that title. The secret is based on The “Laws of Attraction” and basically says that, as I’ve always put it, “You create your own reality”.

Here are some cliff notes on what The Law of Attraction is all about:

There are 5 areas of your life that you should concentrate on and keep in balance with one another. You need to be fullfilled in all 5 areas in order to truly be happy and maximize everything life has to offer you:

1) Financial
2) Relational
3) Intellectual
4) Physical
5) Spiritual

It’s not always easy to figure out what you may truly want out of life in all 5 of these areas. So use the Law of Polarity. And that is to list out all the things you do NOT want. Then for each of those items you do not want in your life, reverse it and turn it into a statement about what you DO want in life.

Never focus on the negative, what you don’t want, what to avoid etc.. because by doing so, you actually invite these situations into your life. Always focus on the positive; whats possible, what you want, how you want to lead your life, etc.. and by focusing on it from this perspective, it’s more likely to come into reality.

I’ve experienced this manifested in Mountain Biking where there is a basic rule that says, “You will go where you are looking”.  So when riding your bike on a narrow trail along the edge of a cliff.. do NOT look down over the cliff, because if you do, you will go there. It’s amazing how this law works regardless of your efforts to prove it wrong.

Some proponents of a more modern version of the Law of Attraction claim that it has roots in Quantum Physics. According to them, thoughts have an energy that attracts like energy. In order to control this energy, proponents state that people must practice four things:

1) Know what one desires and ask the universe for it. (The “universe” is mentioned broadly, stating that it can be anything the individual envisions it to be, from God to an unknown source of energy.)

2) Focus one’s thought upon the thing desired with great feeling such as enthusiasm or gratitude.

3) Feel and behave as if the object of one’s desire is already acquired.

4) Be open to receiving it.

Thinking of what one does not have, they say, manifests itself in the perpetuation of not having, while if one abides by these principles, and avoids “negative” thoughts, the Universe will manifest a person’s desires

I have also made a correlation between Quantum Physics and the way life works regarding the “Law of Attraction”. Quantum Mechanics states that the very ACT of observing electrons in orbit around a nucleous of an Atom can in fact alter it’s course and cause it to change to a new path. Incredible.

I’ve found that when I’ve been in extremely tight situations, they kind that it seems there are no other possible paths to take, it’s possible to “observe” your situation outside of yourself and move to a totally different path. At the very least, this technique has saved me from a few inevitable bar fights.

The 4 steps listed above is quite similar to, and was influenced by, the panentheistic “Seven Steps in Demonstration” as first outlined in the famous non-denominational New Thought book, “Become What You Believe” by Mildred Mann who lists 7 steps:

1) Desire. Get a strong enthusiasm for that which you want in your life, a real longing for something which is not there now.

2) Decision. Know definitely what it is that you want, what it is that you want to do or have, and be willing to pay in spiritual values.

3) Ask. [When sure and enthusiastic] ask for it in simple, concise language.

4) Believe. Believe in the accomplishment with strong faith, consciously and subconsciously.

5) Work. Work at it. . . a few minutes daily, seeing yourself in the finished picture. Never outline details, but rather see yourself enjoying the particular thing . . .  Eventually, you will see a time where it will just appear, as a gift or such, or you may see an opportunity to get what you we’re asking for.

6) Feel gratitude. Always remember to say, “Thank you, God [or the universe],” and begin to feel the gratitude in your heart. The most powerful prayer we can ever make is those three words, provided we really feel it. Feel as though you already have what you wanted.

7) Feel expectancy. Train yourself to live in a state of happy expectancy. . . .  Find a way it will appear in your life, and keep believing in that. May it be that someone gives it to you, or you find an initiation to get it.
